Bridgestone: Time to Rethink Driver Training

A new Bridgestone-commissioned survey underscores something we’ve long supported: that safer roads start with better-prepared drivers, especially the newest ones.

The Road Ahead: A Graduated Path

In a poll of 2,000 UK motorists, 57% voiced support for the introduction of a Graduated Driving Licence (GDL). For those unfamiliar, a GDL is a tiered system that introduces new drivers to the road with specific limitations—such as passenger and nighttime restrictions—before full driving rights are granted. It’s a system designed to help new drivers build real-world experience while reducing risk.

Among the proposed ideas:

  • 50% support displaying a ‘recently passed’ sign on the vehicle for up to a year.
  • 50% support limiting new drivers to one passenger in their first 12 months on the road.

This level of consensus suggests a growing public appetite for reform, echoing concerns that young drivers are often left underprepared after passing their driving test.

The Tyre Talks Begin Early

One standout insight: 70% of respondents believe tyre safety should be taught before learners even hit the road. This might seem niche, but considering TyreSafe’s statistic that three in five young drivers admit to never checking their tyres, it’s a timely reminder of the basics being overlooked.

Tyre neglect isn’t just a maintenance oversight—it’s a safety hazard. Worn or underinflated tyres compromise grip, especially in wet conditions, and can drastically increase braking distances.

Driving Change with Bridgestone’s E8 Commitment

This research isn’t just a PR play for Bridgestone—it ties into their broader sustainability strategy, the E8 Commitment. The initiative focuses on eight principles that guide the company’s mission. This survey clearly links to “Ease” and “Extension”, reinforcing their role in making road safety education more accessible and forward-thinking.

Helen Roe, Bridgestone UK’s Senior Marketing Manager, sums it up:

“Our findings reinforce the importance of road and tyre safety education, particularly amongst young drivers who might be at greater risk on roads in the initial period of passing their driving test. It’s clear that motorists want better preparation for new drivers – and tyre safety plays a crucial role in reducing accidents and keeping roads safer.”
