Upgrading the in-car experience of an older vehicle can be tricky — but CARPURIDE’s new W903 screen offers a compelling and seamless solution for drivers who want modern functionality without a complex retrofit.
A Smart Addition to the VW Transporter
We tested the W903 in a 2016 Volkswagen Transporter camper van — a vehicle that predates modern infotainment systems like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The screen was fitted just above the existing media unit, with power drawn from a single USB-C cable, making the setup exceptionally tidy and practical.
From the outset, the W903 felt like a major leap forward from the CARPURIDE W103 Pro we reviewed previously. While screen size and resolution remain similar, the new device introduces several tangible upgrades.
Slimmer Bezel, Bigger Capabilities
The most immediate design improvement is the slimmed-down bezel, which enhances both form and function. However, the standout feature is undoubtedly the built-in dash cam with a 350-degree swivel. While we used it strictly as a forward-facing camera, the ability to rotate it toward the cabin may appeal to rideshare drivers.
It’s also nice to see CARPURIDE include a 64GB memory card in the box — a thoughtful touch that gets you recording straight away.
Wireless Connectivity Done Right
For Android users (or Apple), this unit is a dream. Wireless Android Auto setup is smooth: you configure via Bluetooth, then the screen auto-connects via Wi-Fi, delivering a reliable and lag-free experience. It was particularly impressive to find that phone calls routed through the van’s inbuilt microphone and speakers still work — and even the multifunction steering wheel controls now function correctly with this setup. That wasn’t the case with the W103 Pro.
Apple CarPlay is also supported wirelessly, and voice control works well through Siri and Google Assistant.
Performance and Versatility
The W903 boots quickly and its operating system feels snappier than its predecessor. The screen is responsive, the brightness adjusts automatically, and the resolution looks crisp enough for both navigation and media playback.
Another noteworthy addition is the EveLink feature, which allows for full phone screen mirroring. Whether you’re streaming movies or sharing navigation from other apps, it’s a versatile tool that goes beyond standard infotainment functionality.
Audio output can be configured via built-in speakers, Bluetooth, FM transmission, or AUX. But from our testing, Bluetooth remains the most effective method — maintaining sound quality while integrating fully with existing systems.
The Smart Choice for Retrofitters
The W903 stands out as an alternative to fully replacing a factory head unit — something that’s often costly and risks losing OEM functionality. In contrast, this portable unit enhances the driving experience without major modifications. It’s also ideal for vehicles where head unit replacement is impractical or undesirable.
Final Thoughts
CARPURIDE has delivered a thoughtful and highly functional update with the W903. It’s well-built, easy to install, and packed with the features that matter most: wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a high-quality integrated dash cam, and support for steering wheel controls.
If you’re looking to modernise your older vehicle without ripping apart the dashboard, this screen is a superb solution. The W903 earns a well-deserved spot on our recommended list — and yes, it’s staying put in our VW camper. Currently £139.99 on Amazon.
