Volkswagen’s ID. EVERY1 Lowers The Electric Car Barrier To Entry

It’s a well-known fact that while electric car sales have accelerated rapidly around the globe, it hasn’t really reached mass saturation in as widespread of a manner as we’d originally thought. One of the many reasons why is quite simply due to the price; EVs are still just too expensive to buy and own for most ordinary people – not to mention the extreme depreciation curve – when compared to a more conventional internal combustion engine vehicle. So, now begins the race to the bottom; a race among carmakers to produce the best cheap EV possible, and it appears as though VW might’ve finally caught up with their new and highly attractive ID. EVERY1.

Alas, as you see it here, the ID. EVERY1 is currently just a concept car, but it does showcase the future of Volkswagen’s electric line-up. Designed with the European market in mind and made to be the affordable point of entry into VW’s electric ID family, the production version of the ID. EVERY1 will launch sometime in 2027 with a rather appealing price tag of around €20,000. For those of you who might not be keen to wait all too long, though, then worry not, as VW will be launching a slightly more expensive ID. 2all in 2026, priced at around €25,000. Both are built atop VW’s MEB front-wheel drive (FWD) platform, as part of their Electric Urban Car Family.

A Cheap And Cheerful Electric Car For Everyone

At first glance, despite being in conceptual form for now, the Volkswagen ID. EVERY1 concept certainly looks the part, and it does carry over some of the familial features that you’d seen in other ID models. According to VW, the cute little VW Up was one of the inspirations for the ID. EVERY1, with its compact and cutesy looks, mixed with a rather bold and approachable design language. You’ll probably see this ethos a lot more moving forward, as it previews the brand’s new face, in particular, with that dynamic front-end lighting signature and a ‘smiling’ tail-end, in addition to providing Volkswagen with a distinctive and strong identity amongst other EVs.

Looks are just the start of it too, with the ID. EVERY1 makes excellent use of space for all your passengers and cargo. As you see it here, the ID. EVERY1 has a total length of 3,880mm, which puts it, size-wise, between the old Volkswagen Up and the current-gen Polo. So, the ID. EVERY1 will be quite diminutive, though it would still feature an interior spacious enough to neatly and comfortably fit 4 people. More to that, in its current concept form, the ID. EVERY1 boasts quite a respectable 305 litres of boot space further in the back. Speaking of, as with many VWs these days, tech remains at the forefront, with the new ID. EVERY1 powered by next-gen software.

Previewing The Future For VW’s Electric Line-Up

In fact, Volkswagen is even promising lifelong software updates and upgrades, which would in theory allow you to tack on and add more features over time. Granted, I’ll believe it when I see it, but it’s a nice thing to hope for, at least. If there’s one thing I could hold VW to would be the brand’s electric powertrains, and the ID. EVERY1, once it reaches production form, will feature a newly developed electric motor. Though it only outputs 95PS of power, given how small and lightweight it’ll be, I reckon horsepower won’t be a huge issue. Plus, the ID. EVERY1 is claimed to be able to reach a 130km/h (81mph) top speed, which should be more than adequate.

With this new MEB platform in mind, VW is able to further optimise packaging and efficiency, with the latter enabling the ID. EVERY1 to reach an estimated maximum range of 250+km (or 155+ miles) on a full charge. For such a tiny city car, it’s actually quite impressive that VW will be able to crank out that much range from it! Suffice it to say, the ID. EVERY1 will be a hugely crucial litmus test for Volkswagen, as the brand aims to release 9 new models by 2027, with 4 of them being all-electric models. Still, if the ID. EVERY1 is anything to go by, I’d say VW has a good start for now, but I’m definitely keen to test drive the production model when it’s here.
