Volvo EX30 Cross Country Revealed as Electric Scandi Soft-roader

For those looking to buy an EV suitable for normal life and capable of some light off-road exploration, the only choice has been the pricey Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo. Fortunately, Volvo has the answer for those with such niche desires. The new EX30 Cross Country is a beefed-up version of the popular compact SUV, bringing the Swedes’ outdoorsy line into the next generation of mobility.

For the City and Beyond

Being relatively compact, all-electric and boasting a range big enough for plenty of urban driving (265 miles) the chunkier EX30 is perfectly suited for the city. However, there’s also a range of upgrades for those seeking to escape urban areas.

The EX30 Cross Country is higher than the standard model, with larger wheels and the option of all-terrain tyres for when the going gets a touch tougher. As you’d expect, it’s all-wheel drive, boosting traction, to the detriment of its range.

Let’s face it: looks matter to ensure everyone knows it’s not a regular EX30. Therefore, the Cross Country gets a special dark colour on the front shield and boot lid, as well as wheel arch extensions for a more rugged look. Front and rear skid plates provide protection and add to the chunkier aesthetic of the jacked-up model.

A Real ‘Cross Country Experience’?

Somewhat disappointingly, the Volvo EX30 Cross Country has the same interior as the model it’s based on. While this means it’s stylish and practical, as are so many Volvos, it’s in stark contrast to the exterior, which has been noticeably altered.

It’s also the first SUV to bear the Cross Country name, although it’s likely a result of EXC sounding a bit complicated at the start of every electric Volvo SUV’s name, and the EX30 lacking any real off-road ability.

However, Volvo is introducing a ‘Cross Country Experience’ package for the EX30, which is a discounted bundle including a load carrier, a roof basket, 18-inch all-terrain tyres and mudflaps. EX30 Cross Countrys with all this kit should avoid any criticism of not fitting the bill, although it’s hard to imagine many buyers will plump for the full works.

Deliveries will begin later this spring, although the Volvo EX30 Cross Country is not yet available to order in the UK. Prices haven’t been confirmed, but as it uses the top-of-the-line twin-motor powertrain and is only available in Ultra trim, expect it to be available for just below £50,000.
