The brand-new and highly-anticipated Volvo ES90 is finally here after a lot of teasing, but now that it’s here, Volvo considers it to be in a class of its own… Literally. Defying traditional vehicle classes, the fully-electric Volvo ES90 merges a saloon’s sleek styling, a fastback’s flexibility, and the spaciousness of an SUV. That said, it really does try to be everything for everyone, and with the first ES90 examples arriving soon across European markets – with further expansion later in 2025 and 2026 – you might be able to drive one soon. Granted, do be prepared to be hit right in the face with a tech tour de force, with Volvo’s new ES90 EV made to evolve more over time.
Deep inside, the next-gen core computing that manages all the gadgets on the ES90 is 8 times more powerful than previous Volvo models. Moreover, the ES90 will be the first Volvo to adopt an 800V EV architecture, which ought to mean that you’ll be able to enjoy faster charging and longer range than any prior Volvo EV. This is all packaged in what I think is one of the prettiest Volvos in recent times. Better yet, it isn’t just sleek and versatile, with the flowing roofline and elevated ride height, but it makes excellent use of space. A vast tailgate hatch opens up to the ES90’s 424-litre boot, which you can expand further to 733 litres with the rear seats folded.
Scandinavian Aesthetics, Clever Design, & Comfort
Speaking of its interior, the ES90’s wheelbase is a whopping 3.1 metres long, which is no doubt superb news for your second-row rear passengers. The cabin experience is complemented by a plethora of ambient lighting, in addition to the airiness afforded by the panoramic roof, four-zone climate control (with an advanced air purifier system), and a fantastic premium Bowers & Wilkins sound system. It’s a tech fest in here too, with a Google-powered infotainment system, housed within a gigantic 14.5-inch central touchscreen, and next to it, you’ll find a 9-inch fully digital gauge cluster and heads-up display, in addition to a handy 360-degree camera system.
But I think that’s enough about the tech for now, because as a car, the new Volvo ES90 is quite impressive, to boot. Built atop Volvo’s latest SPA2 platform, the new ES90 shares a lot with the more SUV-like Volvo EX90. Volvo will be keen to boast that underneath, it has not one, but two NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin computers, making it the most powerful Volvo thus far in terms of raw computing and processing power. That makes sense once you notice that the ES90 is equipped with no less than 1 lidar sensor, 5 radars, 7 cameras, and 12 ultrasonic sensors! As such, it will enable the Volvo ES90 to run properly powerful advanced driver assistance and safety tech.
Computer On Wheels & Lots Of Tech Under The Hood
When it comes to actually driving the brand-new Volvo ES90, one of its noteworthy features is the 800V EV architecture underneath. In layman’s terms, this means we are able to experience way faster charging and far improved energy efficiency than we’re typically seeing now. It has a rather exceptional WLTP range of up to 700km on a full charge, and if you’re taking the ES90 on longer road trips, you could top up the battery in a jiffy. In particular, the 800V architecture is able to gain a mighty 300km of range in just 10 minutes of charging, using a 350kW charger. So, if you’re still lingering from range anxiety, the new ES90 is one EV to keep an eye out for.
It also helps that the ES90 is extremely slippery, with a very low drag coefficient of a mere 0.25 Cd. This makes the ES90 one of the most aerodynamically efficient Volvos ever made! Once the ES90 arrives at your local showroom, you could pick and choose between 3 powertrain options; a single-motor RWD model with 333PS and 480Nm of torque, a dual motor AWD model with a total output of 449PS and 670Nm of torque, as well as a dual motor AWD Performance model with a total output of 680PS and 870Nm of torque. There are 2 battery sizes, as well; a 92kWh and a 106kWh pack, coming soon to a Volvo UK showroom near you and available for order.
